Store Policies

yogiOur commitment is what makes us different
Our store operates on the simple philosophy that we are here to help companion parrots be as happy, healthy and self-confident as possible. We are committed to quality, safety, and education, and we encourage all parrot owners to have the same commitment.

We care about all birds, not just the ones we sell or own
Our policies are what make us different from other bird stores. As fellow pet owners, we believe that our responsibility extends not only to the safety of our birds, but to our customers' birds as well. Our store policies help protect the health and happiness of all birds, and allow our customers to shop confidently.

Why are we so strict?
Companion birds are living beings that depend entirely on humans for their care and well-being. This is our primary consideration whether creating store policies, evaluating a toy, carrying a food line, or selling any species of parrot.

We Don't Take Health Risks
Please read our Store Rules before visiting our store.

We Don't Spread Hype
We are very passionate about birds and are delighted to help educate customers who are considering a companion parrot. We make every effort to keep up on the latest avian news, health and nutrition issues, scientific studies and general species information. However, we do not claim to be experts on all avian topics. If we don't know the answer, we will tell you, and direct you to a more knowledgeable source.

We Don't Sell Parrots to "Just Anyone"
Parrots are engaging, intelligent creatures that can make wonderful companion pets. However, the responsibility and challenges of owning an exotic bird are not for everyone. If we feel that you do not meet our criteria for owning and caring for a bird, we will not sell you one. Period.

We Don't Sell Hybrids
Many people feel strongly against hybrid parrots and breeding hybrids is illegal in the state of New Jersey. A hybrid is a cross between two different species: for example, a "Harlequin Macaw" is the result of a Blue & Gold and a Greenwing macaw cross. Although very beautiful, hybrid parrots have wildly unpredictable personalities and are often prone to stress-related illness. Many have hidden genetic defects or weaknesses that can make them more susceptible to disease or give them half the normal life expectancy of their non-hybrid parents.

We Don't Sell Smaller Birds
Although we love the smaller birds like finches, parakeets, lovebirds and cockatiels, we don't sell them. The birds we sell must have a breeders health certificate. Unfortunately, most breeders cannot provide this for the smaller birds. According to statistics, theres up to a 50% chance that untested birds carry some form of bacterial, fungal or viral disease. This is not a risk we are willing to take.

We Don't Use "Self Serve" Food Bins
"Self Serve" food bins accessed by the general public are very prone to cross-contamination. It's almost impossible to control moisture, debris or insect infestation, not to mention possible virus or disease contamination, so we do not use bins. However, many of our customers prefer to mix and match foods, and have requested that we carry bulk foods.

To accommodate our customers, we have chosen to bag bulk foods ourselves. Every week, fresh seed and pellets arrives from the distributors. We then measure, bag, seal and date convenient sized portions. That way, we keep it at "food bin" prices without the worry of cross-contamination.

We Don't Board Birds, Clip Nails or Trim Wings
We are not set up to board or groom birds nor do we have future plans to do so. We believe that boarding and grooming should never be taken lightly. Grooming can be very stressful for some birds and stressed birds can pick up viral or bacterial "bugs". Boarding poses even greater concerns. Most of the fatal viral diseases are airborne, and if one bird at a facility has a disease, then all of the others are at risk of contracting that disease.

Good boarding facilities require that ALL birds be tested and proven negative of these major diseases before entering the facility. Some of the best boarding facilities maintain separate rooms with an independent air supply for Old World and New World species.

Thank you for taking the time to read our policies.
Please remember that these policies are here not to criticize others,
but to protect the birds in our care.
